Garlic, cover crops, the cleanup you keep putting off. What’s going in the ground this month that you’ll thank yourself for in March?

Great question to kick off the season! Around here I always make sure garlic is in by late October — hard-neck varieties hold up beautifully through a cold winter and the spring scapes are half the reward.
Cover crops are the other thing I’d hate to skip. A mix of winter rye and hairy vetch has been good to me for years — fixes nitrogen, keeps the soil from washing, and the chickens go wild when I turn it under in spring.
What’s everybody else got going in? Drop your zone so your neighbors can borrow the idea.
